My General Cover Letter

Dear _____________ :

I am an experienced teacher with strong communication skills and cross-cultural experience. I have always been interested in reading, writing, and literature. After living in Korea, I returned to the United States in August 2003. Since then I have worked in the Intensive ESL program at Pacific Northwewst Community College as a tutor and substitute instructor, scored standardized writing tests for Standardized Testing Service, and taught for American Language Institute and Mt. Ranier Community College. American Language Institute is an academic oriented program for foreign students preparing to study in American universities. The Mt. Ranier Community College class is a basic English skills class for immigrants. I have taught ESL for 11 years. My bachelor’s degree is in Elementary Education and English. I became interested in ESL and went directly to Korea. While there, I taught at a language institute and then at a university. At the university I taught Freshmen English Conversation and Sophomore English Pronunciation classes for the Foreign Language Department. I also taught children’s classes in the university’s Foreign Language Center, including Storybook Reading. Prior to that, I developed and taught a vocational English training program for the Job Training Center, a non-profit educational organization in Massachusetts for immigrants and refugees. We received a grant for a pilot program in partnership with the Somali Development Center. While studying for my master’s degree, I was an instructor in the Division of Continuing Education. I taught an integrated skills ESL class as well as an academic writing class. My educational training as well as my varied experiences may make a good contribution to your program.

Personally, I bring a unique blend of tenacity, humor, flexibility, leadership skills, and enthusiasm. Having lived and taught in Korea for a total of 5 years, I have proven ability to adapt and communicate cross-culturally. I am adept at both oral and written communication and interact effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities. My facility in communicating and working successfully with all kinds of people in many different situations can be seen in the variety of teaching settings I have worked in. Through work and studies I have developed good skills with computers, including word processing, spread sheets, and using Internet resources for information and maintaining a personal website. I have earned a reputation as a valuable and cooperative coworker by being fair, honest, and willing to help others. Please contact me by e-mail if you would like to arrange for an interview. I look forward to hearing from you and how I may contribute to your organization’s mission.

Sincerely,

Cheryl
